Leeds
graduates invited to join alumni day
Alan Yentob, Nicholas Witchell, and many more graduates
will gather at the University this Saturday (April 24) as part of
Leeds' centenary celebrations. All graduates are invited to visit
the University and take a trip around campus, meet their contemporaries
and find out what life is like now at the University.
BBC director
of drama and children's programming Alan Yentob will talk about
the 'secret life of BBC' in the Convocation lecture. It will include
the impact of the Hutton report, the charter review and secret footage
from inside the BBC. He will also draw on film of three international
broadcasters giving their views on the future.
Nearly 2000
of the University's graduates have already registered to attend,
visiting departments including geography, mechanical engineering
and music where there will be performances by current students.
Team-building guru, Meredith Belbin will speak at Leeds University
Business School.
At 3pm senior
lecturer and Leeds graduate, Dr Chris Hammond will give a guided
tour of the University's architecture – from redbrick to reinforced
concrete.
BBC Royal correspondent
Nicholas Witchell will be hosting a centenary pub quiz in the student
union at 5.30pm and former students can test their knowledge of
their alma mater. Contestants can expect questions from 'which past
student wrote a Penguin book about the Loch Ness monster?' to 'how
many students did the University have in 1904?'.
The celebrations
will continue into night with a club night in Leeds University Union's
Stylus bar.
Head of the
alumni office and Leeds graduate Jayne Glennon said: "All former
students are encouraged to join in the celebrations on Saturday.
It is a great way to relive student days, revisit old haunts, catch
up with old friends and tutors. It will be the biggest ever gathering
of Leeds alumni in the history of the University."
Graduates can
turn up on the day and register in the student union from 9am.
