Civil Engineering student Krzysztof Sieledczk has been named the Civil Engineering and the Built Environment Undergraduate of the Year 2010, in an award run in association with construction company Laing O’Rourke. Krzysztof won a ten-week placement in Sydney, Australia.

Sarah Wallace
, a second year PhD student from the Earth Surface Science Institute (School of Environment) has won the Royal Society of Chemistry Radiochemistry Group Young Researcher of the Year award.

Leeds students Patric Lemagnen, Tom Mortimore, Charlie Clendon, Richard Allnatt, Henry Wallace-Jones, Keiran Duignan and James Bullock fought off competition from five other finalists in Ernst & Young’s Profitunity to win first prize. Profitunity encourages entrants to turn an idea into money-making reality, whilst learning from business experts (profits go to the Prince’s Trust). The Leeds team finished the competition with profits of £2,300 for venture.

Students from Leeds
formed part of an international group responding to a call from the Australian government to help secure the future of its book industry in the light of new technologies such as eBooks. Universities from the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) sent entrepreneurial students to a four-day forum at the University of Sydney. Mixed teams from the UK, Canada, China and Australia tackled the challenge to develop business plans for the Australian publishing industry. Their work will be presented to the Australian Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
