Professor Stephen Garrity has been appointed as the new Hoffman Wood chair in architectural engineering in the School of Civil Engineering and the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure.
He was previously the principal of consulting engineers Garrity Associates and prior to that was head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Bradford.
His research interests include the behaviour, repair and strengthening of brick and stone masonry and concrete buildings and structures (such as arch bridges, viaducts and tunnels) and heritage conservation.
His work on the rehabilitation of the Hungerford Canal Bridge saw Professor Garrity receive the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Award in 2004. He also received the Institution of Structural Engineers’ Lewis Kent Award for his outstanding contribution to education and training activities.
