The Academy of Social Sciences has conferred the title of academician on Professor of Science Education and Dean of Education John Leach.
Matthew Knight, HR director, has been appointed Vice-chair of the Universities Human Resources, the representative body for staff within UK and Irish universities.
Lecturer in Management and Cultural Industries Dr Javier Stanziola (School of Performance and Cultural Industries), was awarded the 2008 Miró Literary Award in Theatre for his play, Hablemos de lo que no hemos vivido. The award is funded by the Panamanian Institute of Culture and is the largest of its kind for playwrights in Latin America.
Professor of Environmental Management Adrian McDonald (School of Geography) attends the Regional Flood Defence Committee as Minister’s Delegate. Beyond its core business of allocating flood defence funds, the group has been formulating a response to the draft Flood and Water Management Bill, a new Bill prompted by recent extreme floods.
Professor of Elderly Care Medicine John Young (Leeds Institute of Health Sciences) has been awarded the Tenovus Scotland Lady Illingworth Prize for his outstanding contribution to our understanding of disabilities affecting the elderly.
Malachy Carey has been appointed Research Professor of Dynamic Traffic Modelling (Institute for Transport Studies). Professor Carey brings considerable experience to ITS, based on a distinguished academic career of more than 30 years. Working in the ITS networks research group, he will continue to develop his research interests, such as dynamic traffic assignment.
Professor Mark Stuart (Leeds University Business School) is co-editing a special issue of the International Journal of Human Resource Management, which is on the Financial Times’ Top 40 List. Due to be published in 2010, it will focus on the role of the state in human resource management.
Professor Krishna Paudyal and Professor Phil Holmes (Leeds University Business School) are the managing editors of the new journal Review of Behavioural Finance. Professor David Hillier (LUBS) has been accepted onto the editorial board of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.
Research fellow Dr Deborah Holliday (Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine) was part of a UK breast cancer research team that won a £3,000 ‘replacement of animal experiments’ prize from NC3Rs for developing an advanced 3D model of human breast cancer, using human cells to accurately replicate what happens at a cellular level. Professor Joseph Holden (School of Geography) has been invited to join the National Environmental Research Council’s programme advisory board and writing panel for the ‘Changing water cycle’ theme.
Professor Peter Bonsall (Institute for Transport Studies) is acting as an expert adviser to the Scottish Government’s ‘Smarter Choices Smarter Places’ programme, which aims to get more Scots out of their cars and onto bikes and buses.
Professor Peter Grant, Head of Cardiovascular and Diabetes Research (Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics), has received an award for ‘Distinguished leader in insulin resistance’ from the International Committee for Insulin Resistance. He will be presented with the award in November during his lecture at the 7th Annual World Congress on Insulin Resistance in San Francisco.
Dr Terry Wassall (School of Sociology and Social Policy) has been appointed as an associate of the Higher Education Academy’s subject centre for sociology, Anthropology and politics for 2009-2010.
Surya Subedi, Professor of International Law at the School of Law, has been appointed Visiting Professor of International Law and Development at Erasmus University, The Netherlands, for two years.
A production of The Fall of Icarus (pictured below) by George Rodosthenous, Director of Enterprise and Knowledge Transfer, School of Performance and Cultural Industries, was shown in Cologne as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for the fall of the Berlin Wall. Previously shown at Leeds Light Night, the production was commissioned by the Cyprus Embassy in Berlin.
