Professor Duncan McCargo has won the Asia Society Bernard Schwartz award for his book Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and
Legitimacy in Southern Thailand.
The $20,000 prize will be presented in New York this autumn.

Professor Gerard Hodgkinson and Dr Mark Healey (Leeds University Business School) have won the Sumantra Ghoshal Research-to-Practice Award for their paper on the psychological foundations of dynamic capabilities presented at the US Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Professor in experimental biogeochemistry Liane Benning (School of Earth and Environment) has been awarded a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award to carry out independent, original research.

Professor Martin Conway (Institute of Psychological Sciences) has been made a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Professor Sir Alex Markham (Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine), head of the section of translational medicine, has received an honorary degree from the University of York for his significant contribution to medical sciences.

Professor of nanomanufacturing innovation Terence Wilkins (Institute of Particle Science and Engineering) has been awarded the Institute of Measurement and Control’s Callendar Medal for his research in scientific instrumentation.

Economics lecturer Aurelie Charles (Leeds University Business School) was awarded the Kenneth J Koford Memorial Prize by the Eastern Economic Association in the United States for a paper examining Mexico’s ‘low-cost’ manufacturing services.

Professor Paul Brunton (Leeds Dental Institute) has been awarded a fellowship (ad eundem) of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. For his contribution to postgraduate dental education, notably within e-learning, within the UK.

Professor Ian Richardson, Professor Richard Brydson and Professor Richard Taylor (Faculty of Engineering) have won the Pfeil Award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining for their paper on ceramics, which was published in the journal Advances in Applied Ceramics (vol 106, 6).

The Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FSA) has appointed Professor Peter Nolan (Leeds University Business School) to chair a panel of experts tasked with establishing new research programmes on labour markets, work organisation, and stability and change in working lives.

Leeds spin-out Image Analysis is short listed in this year’s Excellence in Business Awards. It is up against web design company Creode run by Leeds graduates James Hannaford and Luke Harrison. The winner will be named on 16 October.
