Professor Bruce Yardley (School of Earth and Environment) has been awarded the Coke Medal of the Geological Society of London, given to those who have made a significant contribution to geology through substantial research and activities in the field of benefit to the community.

Emeritus Professor David Lewis has been awarded this year’s Olney Medal for outstanding achievement in textile chemistry by the Amercian Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).

Professor Nick Wilson (Leeds University Business School) was included in Credit Today magazine’s Credit 100 published in December; a list of the 100 people who have had the greatest impact on the credit industry.

Professor in digital governance Ann Macintosh (Institute of Communications Studies) has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Sweden’s Örebro University in recognition of her work on“eParticipation”, in particular the interplay between humans, technology and governance.

Professor Peter Olmsted (School of Physics and Astronomy) received the British Society of Rheology’s Annual Award 2008 for his research in theoretical soft condensed matter physics, in particular theoretical studies of the physics behind ‘shear banding’.

Dr Rhiannon Turner (Institute of Psychological Sciences) received the Robert B Cialdini Award for an article published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, which investigated the consequences of inter-group contact between whites and South Asians in the UK. The award was made by the Society of Personality and Social Psychology.

Simply the best
The University of Leeds has nominated teaching fellows Dr Rebecca O’Rourke (Education) and Professor Martin Levesley (Mechanical Engineering) for the National Teaching Fellowship awards, to be announced in June.

An additional 15 staff received awards in January as part of the University’s Teaching Fellowship Scheme, which recognises outstanding contributions in teaching and learning support.

Dr Kevin Linch (History) was awarded a full fellowship of £15,000 to fund a research project, plus an annual honorarium of £1,000 for three years. Dr Carole McCartney (Law) and Dr Neil Morris (Membrane and Systems Biology) were awarded full fellowships of £10,000 each for research projects, plus an annual honorarium of £1,000 for two years.

Developmental teaching fellowships were awarded to Dr Honor Aldred (French), Dr Geoff Barker-Read (Academic Quality and Standards Team), Alice Bayliss (Performance & Cultural Industries), Maggie Boyle (Skills@Library), Dr Fiona Douglas (English), Dr Alaric Hall (English), Dr Amanda Harrison (Psychological Sciences), Dr Simon Lightfoot (Politics & International Studies), Dr Rob Mortimer (Earth and Environment), Dr Stuart Murray (English), Dr Michael Ries (Physics and Astronomy) and Mike Sheedy (Design). Each of them will receive £4,000 plus an annual honorarium of £1,000 for one year.
