Žižek – The lecture!
Professor Slavoj Žižek, one of the most original cultural theorists and psychoanalysts of our time, dubbed ‘the Elvis of cultural theory', will be giving an open talk about his latest book, Violence , at the University of Leeds on Tuesday, 18 March.
A prolific author, he writes about all aspects of modern life, from the Iraq war to political correctness, human rights, globalisation, cyberspace, and even Alfred Hitchcock. Žižek combines great intellect with a passionate delivery style and draws huge audiences across the world.
He has stood for the presidency of Slovenia (1990), starred in his own film, Žižek! , (2005), presented the C4 television series The Pervert's Guide to Cinema , and taught at prestigious universities in Paris , London , Chicago , Princeton and New York .
Last year saw the launch of the peer-reviewed International Journal of Žižek Studies, coedited by Dr Paul Taylor from Leeds' Institute of Communications Studies , who will be speaking briefly at the event. To read the journal online go to http://zizekstudies.org
The free talk will be held in the conference auditorium 1, from 6pm until 8pm. All staff, students, alumni and visitors are welcome, as the room can seat 550 people. For any latecomers, a video link of the talk will be offered in conference auditorium 2.
Easter sports campsfor children
Book now to enrol your child in this year's ‘Active8' Easter sports camps, an exciting new initiative from Leeds Sport & Physical Activity, being held from 31 March to 4 April.
The camps offer an opportunity for children 4 to 16 years old to take part in a fun-packed sports programme and learn from qualified coaches. All activities will be held at the University's Sports Centre from 9am to 4pm each day. They include football, squash, basketball, athletics, fencing, badminton, indoor cricket, ultimate frisbee, indoor climbing and dance.

Craft fair for staff
The Staff Centre will be holding another of its popular craft fairs on Wednesday, 5 March between 12 noon and 2pm. A variety of hand-crafted items will be on sale, including leather work, beaded and metal jewellery, and fair trade bags.

Holy sisters up in arms
‘Nuns on the revolutionary stage: convent plays and the Parisian theatre during the French Revolution' is the subject of a seminar being given by Dr Gemma Betros, a lecturer in modern history, on Tuesday, 26 February.
