| Emeritus Professor
John Brindley has been awarded an OBE in the
new year honours list for his services to
higher education.
University Chancellor Lord Bragg of Wigton
received an honorary Doctorate of Literature
for distinction in literature and broadcasting
from Queens University, Belfast.
Copenhagen University has awarded emeritus
professor of medieval history Peter Sawyer
a D Phil honoris causa. Professor Sawyer said:
"As much of my research and teaching
has been concerned with the Vikings and early
Scandinavian history, I have for many years
had close contacts with Danish scholars. Since
the 1970s I have given many lectures in Copenhagen
and other Danish universities and in 1985
I was invited to write the volume on the period
c.700 - 1050 in the new History of Denmark.
As the only non-Danish contributor this was
a huge honour. The degree conferred by Copenhagen
University is an even greater one."
The new University teaching fellows were
announced this month. Three-year fellowships
were awarded to Kath Hodgson, quality management
and enhancement unit and George MacDonald
Ross, philosophy. Existing one-year awards
were increased to full fellowships for Martyn
Clark, computing and Kirsty Forrest, anaesthesia.
Developmental fellowships were awarded to
David Adams, biological sciences, Peter Collis,
PCI and Siobhan Hugh-Jones, institute of psychological
sciences.
