The
Centenary photo competition winner is linguistics
and phonetics student Zoe McNaughton, whose
atmospheric image of a frosty morning in Hyde
Park (above) came out top in a strong field
(see results page).
Special ceremonies begin and end centenary
week (April 22-29), which includes an alumni
day and a diverse range of events
to mark Leeds’ illustrious 100-year
history. An extra day’s holiday will
be granted to all staff on August 27.
At the centenary
celebration in the Great Hall honorary
degrees will be presented to footballer Jack
Charlton, poet Tony Harrison, scientist Julia
Higgins, actor Ian McKellen, supermarket boss
Kenneth Morrison, civil servant Usha Prashar,
academic and entrepreneur David Rhodes and
writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o.
Awards
presenters include honorary graduates: former
West Yorkshire Playhouse chief Jude Kelly,
businessman and pianist Ernest Hall and writer
Caryl Phillips.
After the ceremony there will be tea in the
newly-refurbished Parkinson Court. Tickets

At the centenary
opening ceremony three emeritus professors
– sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, historian
Maurice Beresford and engineer Duncan Dowson
– will receive honorary degrees. The
evening will be a celebration of the University
– including the official opening of
the centenary exhibition – followed
by an informal supper in the refectory.
More than 1,500 Leeds graduates and friends
will attend alumni
day on April 24. The programme includes
reunions and drop-ins organised by schools,
as well as an open house at LUU.
