New year’s honours for Leeds academics

Academics from dentistry, social policy and geography at Leeds have been recognised in the new year’s honours list.

Phil ReesProfessor Phil Rees, left, receives a CBE for services to human geography while retired professor of historical geography Robin Butlin receives an OBE for services to human geography.

Professor Rees said: “I think the honour recognises the value of my discipline to society as a whole. It also reflects the collective work of all the social scientists who have been involved with the census programme of ESRC and JISC, which I had the privilege to co-ordinate from 1992 to 2002.”

Professor of social policy Fiona Williams has been awarded an OBE in the new year honours list for contributions to social policy.

Fiona WilliamsProfessor Williams, right, said: “I’m very grateful to receive this honour as an unexpected recognition for my work in developing new approaches to social policy, especially ones that have been critical of the legacy of the British empire. In view of this, I would join with others in anticipating a review of the awards system so that it breaks free of its old associations.”

Lecturer in child dental health Stella Kwan is recognised with an OBE for services to dentistry. Professor Ed Stentiford of civil engineering has been made a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Professor Adam Crawford in the department of law, Dr Rosalind Brown-Grant in the department of French and head of the school of classics Professor David Levene have been awarded Leverhulme Fellowships.

The title of Emeritus professor has been conferred on the following recently retired professors: David Batchelder, Alan Bullock, Robin Butlin, Geoffrey Cantor, Anne Chamberlain, Shirley Chew, Geoffrey Davies, Geoffrey Fry, Christopher Lance, Alex Longhurst, David Rhodes, Christopher Robson, Bryan Shorrocks and Alan Watson. The full resolutions adopted by Senate are online.
