Professor
Paul Garner has taken up the Cowdray Chair
of Spanish in the department of Spanish and
Portuguese. He was previously Professor of
Spanish and Latin American Studies at Goldsmiths
College, University of London. He is currently
researching a book on the British entrepreneur
Sir Weetman Pearson in turn-of-the-century
Mexico.
Professor
Garik Markarian has been appointed to a chair
in communications systems in the school of
electronic and electrical engineering. He
has more than 20 years of academic and industrial
experience in communications systems. His
research interests include information theory,
communications systems, digital broadcasting
systems, wireless broadband systems, error
correction coding and digital modulation,
and satellite communications.
Dr
Judy Delin has joined the School of Modern
Languages and Cultures where she will work
on language, brand and customer communications.
Since 2001, she has worked part-time as head
of research at the Information Design Unit
branding and design agency, looking at how
people understand everyday communications.
Dr
Sally Johnson has been appointed to a chair
in linguistics and as head of linguistics
and phonetics in the school of modern languages
and cultures. She leaves Lancaster University
where she was a senior lecturer in linguistics.
Her main research is into socio-linguistics
and language and gender.
Stephen
Westland has joined the School of Design as
Professor of Colour Science and Technology.
His research interests are colour vision,
colour imaging and colour engineering. His
research uses psychophysical and computational
methods to explore the mechanisms and strategies
that underpin human colour vision.
All took up their posts on 1 January. |
