Jie Xu has been appointed as professor of computing. He comes to Leeds from the University of Durham where he led research on distributed systems and Internet computing. His research interests include dependable distributed systems, fault tolerance, and secure Grid computing for large-scale e-science applications.


Anne Neville takes up a chair in tribology and surface engineering on Nov 1. Professor Neville ran the corrosion and surface engineering research group at Heriot-Watt University. Her work focuses on lubrication and wear, corrosion and mineral scaling. She has strong links with industry in the UK and abroad.


Richard Thorpe has been appointed to a new chair in management dev
elopment in LUBS from Oct 1. Professor Thorpe’s research focuses on the evolution of business knowledge within SMEs, part of the ESRC's evolution of business knowledge initiative. He joins Leeds from Manchester Metropolitan University.
