News in brief
Senate on fees

A motion was passed in Senate, ‘deeply regretting’ the increases in student fees, proposed by the White Paper. The motion also expressed concern that the new arrangements may give the government the excuse not to fund university education adequately and could create ‘needlessly divisive barriers between and within institutions.’ Senate called on the Vice-Chancellor and Council to ‘continue actively to lobby to change the funding plans’ and ‘to seek greater public financial support for university teaching.’ The motion was being discussed in Council as the Reporter went to press.
