Mother care

Professor Mary RenfrewProfessor Mary Renfrew is to chair the World Health Organization’s committee for maternal and newborn health, responsible for setting priorities for the WHO’s work for the next six years to reduce the very high rates of maternal and neonatal death and illness, particularly in developing countries.

Half a million women still die of pregnancy and childbirth every year, with over seven million babies either stillborn or dying before they are a week old. Professor Renfrew said: “We are committed to the goal that all women, wherever they live, should have skilled and appropriate care in pregnancy and birth.”
