Joining with Japan

It’s celebration with a smile for the Department of Oral Biology, which has just marked 20 years of productive partnership with the University of Aichi-Gakuin in Nagoya, Japan.

The Leeds-Nagoya link began with Haruo Nakagaki – now Professor of Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health- came to work as a visiting research lecturer with Professor John Weatherell. Reciprocal visits by Leeds and Nagoya scientists followed, with a wealth of joint publications produced over the last 20 years.

Following Professor Weatherell’s retirement, Professor Colin Robinson has continued and developed the partnership, which has been expanded to include physics, opening up new collaborations in nanotechnology. The Departments of Physics and Oral Biology were jointly awarded a special “Japanese partnering award” from the UK research councils for their work with Nagoya.
