More on offer than you might imagine

University staff could be missing out on a wide range of benefits and discounts, the staff well-being survey from last December has revealed. While one in 20 staff have benefited from the 'people matter' scheme run by human resources, just over three-quarters weren't aware of the initiative and only 10% have visited the website to see what's on offer.

'People matter' negotiates benefits and special offers on a range of products and services for University staff. Recruitment and retention manager Lisa Furlong, who oversees the scheme, believes the survey might not be providing a full picture.

"The results are a little disappointing," she said. "However, it's possible that many who responded might not be aware of what the scheme covers and how they benefit.

"Anyone who travels to work on a University metro card, is a member of Leeds Hospital Fund, or uses the University nursery, is benefiting from people matter. The staff counsellor or the new 24-hour counselling service are all provided under the scheme, as are the Christmas discount cards, and reductions in shops such as Costco and Blackwells."

A new human resources website, to be launched later this year, will help promote the scheme amongst University staff. New benefits are advertised through the website or the Reporter.

"Every day I get calls from companies who would like to promote their products and services to staff at discounted prices, from insurance, sports and leisure facilities and flights to holidays or hotel accommodation," said Lisa Furlong. "At the moment, I'm keeping these companies on hold, until we know more about what staff want."

If there are services you would like people matter to provide, contact Lisa Furlong on or call ext 34130.
