Honours
Senior teaching fellow and Leeds University Rugby League coach Dr.
Martin Crick was named coach of the year at the student
Rugby League annual awards ceremony in Salford. The
University was named club of the year.
Professor Ian Hughes has been honoured by the Reial Academia de Farmacia
de Catalunya by admisssion to the Royal Academy as
Academic Correspondent. Professor Hughes received
the medal and scroll at a ceremony in the 12th century
hall of the Reial Academia in Barcelona. The award
recognises the work of Professor Hughes in the development
of the teaching of pharmacology at a European level.
Biology
research fellow Dr Graham Askew was awarded the Westminster
medal at the SET for Britain annual reception
for Britain's top young scientists, engineers and
technologists at the House of Commons.
The Rheumatology Unit at Leeds has won the highly prestigious Eular
Prize for the outstanding contribution to rheumatology
in Europe. The award will be made in June in Stockholm
and is the first occasion a British unit has won this
award.
Brian Page OBE who retired as director of the language centre
(then the foreign language teaching unit) in 1990
has been awarded a Comenius Fellowship by the
Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research
(CILT) in recognition of successful long-term endeavour
in language teaching and learning in a local and regional
context, as well as at national or international level.

lecturer Dr Francis O'Gorman has been elected a Fellow
of the Royal Historical Society.
