will be very sorry to learn of the death of Miss Margaret
Britton BA, Dip.Lib, on 7 April 2002. Miss Britton graduated
in French from the University of London in 1960. Following
a year as Student Assistant Librarian at KingŐs College,
London, she read for the Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship
at University College, which she was awarded in 1963.
Between September 1962 and May 1964, she was employed
as an Assistant Librarian at the London School of Economics
and Political Science, and was then appointed to a similar
post in the Brotherton Library, which she took up on 20
Britton was for many years Education subject consultant
in the Library, held in high regard for her professional
competence and pleasant and helpful manner. She spent
session 1972-73 on leave of absence, working in the Baker
Library of the Graduate School of Business Administration
at Harvard University.
Britton took early retirement from her post in September
1997, after thirty-three yearsŐ service with the University.
She was subsequently re-engaged on a part-time basis between
November 1997 and January 2000, to carry out work for
the British Education Index.
was an enthusiastic member of the Senior Common Room Walking
Club and her wide interests included a deep personal concern
with theology and women's issues. The text of her scholarly
edition of the autobiography of Ulrich Brker was completed
shortly before her death. The private funeral has taken
