Obituary

Miss Margaret Britton

Members will be very sorry to learn of the death of Miss Margaret Britton BA, Dip.Lib, on 7 April 2002. Miss Britton graduated in French from the University of London in 1960. Following a year as Student Assistant Librarian at KingŐs College, London, she read for the Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship at University College, which she was awarded in 1963. Between September 1962 and May 1964, she was employed as an Assistant Librarian at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and was then appointed to a similar post in the Brotherton Library, which she took up on 20 May 1964.

Miss Britton was for many years Education subject consultant in the Library, held in high regard for her professional competence and pleasant and helpful manner. She spent session 1972-73 on leave of absence, working in the Baker Library of the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University.

Miss Britton took early retirement from her post in September 1997, after thirty-three yearsŐ service with the University. She was subsequently re-engaged on a part-time basis between November 1997 and January 2000, to carry out work for the British Education Index.

She was an enthusiastic member of the Senior Common Room Walking Club and her wide interests included a deep personal concern with theology and women's issues. The text of her scholarly edition of the autobiography of Ulrich BrŠker was completed shortly before her death. The private funeral has taken place.
