Keeping it clean

Residents throughout West Yorkshire can help clean up their neighbourhood, in a series of 'visual audits' by researchers from the University.

Geography researchers Drs Graham Clarke and Mark Birkin will be compiling evidence of neglect, such as graffiti and damaged property, throughout areas of Bradford, Calderdale, Leeds, Kirklees and Wakefield. West Yorkshire police young citizens' panel, neighbourhood watch and residents' groups will help by taking photographs of things they like or dislike in their local area.

Assistant chief constable Greg Wilkinson said: "People don't feel safe in communities which appear neglected. But once problem areas are identified, the real work of cleaning and clearing up will begin, with the help of the probation service and youth offending teams."

A further audit is planned in six months' time.
