Leeds
scoops top fashion awards
University
fashion students have been sweeping the board at nationwide
fashion competitions this year with Leeds taking first
and second place in one, a highly commended in another,
and fielding nearly half the semi-finalists in a third.
Third-years
Fay Williams and Faye Shephard took first and second prize
in the Elle Creation Womenswear competition. Fay Williams
won £1,000 and a work placement at Elle's head office
for her simple but effective design of a red cotton-mix
shift dress, secured with two side ties. The judges said
that the design 'complemented the Elle ethos, catering
for the young, modern woman'.

Faye
Shephard's design of a safari-inspired blue cotton chambray
trouser suit gained her the second prize of £500. The
University of Leeds had three other semi-finalists in
the competition.
The
T-shirt design which first-year Gabrielle Hopwood entered
in the New Look competition gained a highly commended,
winning Gabrielle £1,000 towards the cost of her final
collection, as well as the possibility of a work placement
and a visit to head office to meet the company's managing
director.
Five
of the twelve semi-final places in the British clothing
industry suppliers association student design award were
taken by Leeds second-year students.
Helen
Shooter, Saleha Choudhury, Laura Nutter, Gillian Thewlis
and Rosalyn Pollard are currently making up their outfits
Ð their brief is fun, but functional, golfwear Ð to show
in the finals on May 14.
Third-year
students are also taking part in the Top Shop sponsored
Prince's Trust graduate fashion event held at Battersea
on June 11.
