Giving rewards for exceptional work

All staff can now apply for special payments as part of an initiative for rewarding and developing staff. The University is allocating 740,000 from a 1.7m HEFCE grant to fund the payments.

There are strict criteria for the awards. An important element of the scheme will allow some lecturers on grade A to move up the scale, or gain promotion to grade B, where they can show satisfactory results in all areas of work.

Other payments will be one-off only, in recognition of particular achievements or contributions, rather than for overall excellence. Payments will also be awarded to retain staff with particular skills or knowledge, who would be difficult to replace, and to help fund attendance at conferences, training courses or to cover additional study leave.

The money will be distributed to resource centres on a strictly per capita basis, and allocations will be made by departmental promotions committees.

The application deadline is April 12, and the results will be sent out by letter in August.

It is also hoped that the HEFCE grant will enable other benefits to be offered to staff, such as bridging between short-term contracts, staff counselling services, and improved holiday entitlement for support staff.

For further information on the criteria and application procedure, contact human resources on ext 35773 or see the website at
