fire broke out in the Chemistry building on January 24.
Nobody was hurt, and the damage to the building has been
estimated at around £25,000.
fire was spotted by a member of the security staff called
to investigate reports of smoke in the building. University
staff fought the blaze with fire extinguishers until the
fire brigade arrived. The fire is believed to have been
started by contractors on the roof and spread down the
lift shaft one of three in the building. Around
350 staff were evacuated from the building, and the adjoining
Baines Wing and Parkinson buildings.
building was due to be back to normal as we went to press,
although some equipment will still need attention.
