Building blaze

A fire broke out in the Chemistry building on January 24. Nobody was hurt, and the damage to the building has been estimated at around 25,000.

The fire was spotted by a member of the security staff called to investigate reports of smoke in the building. University staff fought the blaze with fire extinguishers until the fire brigade arrived. The fire is believed to have been started by contractors on the roof and spread down the lift shaft – one of three in the building. Around 350 staff were evacuated from the building, and the adjoining Baines Wing and Parkinson buildings.

The building was due to be back to normal as we went to press, although some equipment will still need attention.
