Festival offers taste of other cultures

BBC Look North's Harry Gration danced his way round last month's festival of languages, which celebrated the European Year of Languages. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Alan Wilson welcomed Look North and over 700 school pupils from across Yorkshire to the event. He said: "We are very lucky that English has become a major international language, but it doesn't take away the responsibility for us to have a good proportion of the population who can understand and speak more than one language."

Visitors were offered taster courses in many of the 17 languages studied at the University, including Dutch, Arabic and Japanese. After taking advantage of these, Harry Gration reported on the Festival for Look North and tried out his new language skills.
