Lightning strike

Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to phone networks and other systems by the lightning strike at the University on October 15. As there was no physical damage to buildings, the actual site of the strike canít be identified, but staff and students at the south of the Leeds campus heard and felt the impact.

A tree outside the Great Hall suffered damage and has since been felled. The strike disabled the building management system which controls fire and intruder alarms, heating and ventilation systems. Around fifty phone cards and some parts of the switchboard were damaged. The estimated is over £100,000.
