Science spin-off success

The University spin-off Science Warehouse, which provides internet based solutions for purchasing laboratory supplies and services, has reached a major landmark less than a year after its launch. Four major universities – King’s College London, Queen Mary and Westfield College and the universities of Sheffield and North London – have signed up with the company, and together with the University of Leeds, this provides a combined spend of £300m per annum.

Science Warehouse was co-founded by former deputy head of the school of biochemistry and molecular biology Dr David Hames and Dr Jonathan Betts, formerly of Leeds Innovations Ltd and was supported by investment from the Forward Group as part of their £20m agreement with the University. Science Warehouse, based in Leeds, has grown to over 30 employees since its launch in February 2001 and signed up over 80 suppliers in the last four months.
