Striking it rich

If there's gold in 'them there hills' then Dr Steve Freeman and Dr Andrew Barnicoat of Rock Deformation Research are the ones to find it. The two earth scientists have been working in the Red Lake area of Canada to locate seams of gold on behalf of two mining companies.

Looking at where gold has already been found, they study the chemistry of the rocks and geological structure of the area and use unique modelling techniques to find other folds and faults where gold should be present. They are now going out to Canada to supervise exploratory drilling.

Dr Barnicoat is confident. "We’ll definitely find gold," he said. "The question is whether we find enough for the companies to viably exploit."
