Prestigious grant for ground-breaking ‘visionary’ research

A prestigious grant has been awarded to the University for ground-breaking work in industrial process tomography. The five-year EPSRC platform grants are eligible only to ‘world leading groups’ to provide a continuity of funding for key staff, to undertake short-term adventurous research and enhance national and international networking.

Groundbreaking technology: (l to r) Mi Wang, Kevin Roberts, Richard Williams and Brian Hoyle

The 406,000 grant has been won by a multi-disciplinary team from the schools of electronic engineering (Professor Brian Hoyle) and process, environmental and materials engineering (Professor Kevin Roberts, Dr Mi Wang and Professor Richard Williams). The group has spearheaded the world development of this new technology, which allows industrial process designers and users to ‘see inside’ their processes, in the same way that medical tomography provides a diagnostic view of the human body. The technique is used in the oil, gas, paint, pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs industries.
