Five candidates in PVC election

Unprecedented interest has been shown in the election of a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor, with five candidates contesting the vacancy created by the departure of Professor John Macklin to become Vice-Chancellor of the University of Paisley. In the last election in 1998, there were three candidates for the post.

The five candidates are: Professor of social and economic history John Chartres; philosophy lecturer and former dean of students, Jim Parry; dean for research for BLESS, Professor Alan Pearman of the business school; Professor Richard Taylor, director of continuing education and dean for learning and teaching for BLESS; and Professor Katie Wales of the school of English, who is dean for learning and teaching in the faculty of Arts.

Ballot papers have gone out to Senate members, and must be returned by 12 noon on June 10 and the results will be announced the following day. Voters are being asked to rank candidates, with the lowest scoring person eliminated and the votes transferred until a successful candidate secures 50% of the votes cast.
