Emeritus Professor Adrian Hastings

A memorial service for Adrian Hastings, who died on 30 May, was held on 22 September at Holy Rosary Church, Chapeltown Road, Leeds. The Rt Revd Frank Weston, Bishop of Knaresborough, and Mgr Peter McGuire, Vicar-General of Leeds, officiated. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Harry Lewis, Professors Kim Knott and Nigel Biggar, and Mrs Ann Hastings read extracts from Adrian's own writings. The large congregation included the Rt Revd David Jenkins and Professor Adrian's predecessor and successor in the Chair of Theology, Roger Gair (University Secretary), colleagues from this University and other institutions, members of the Bosnian Institute, former students, family and friends.
Dr Hugh Pyper, Head of the School of Theology and Religious Studies, gave a brief introduction to the newly established Adrian Hastings Africa Scholarship.

Adrian's last book is to be published on 19 October by SPCK. Oliver Tomkins: The Ecumenical Enterprise is a biography of the former Bishop of Bristol and leading figure in the early history of the World Council of Churches. A memorial volume, Christianity and the African Imagination: Essays in Honour of Adrian Hastings (edited by D Maxwell with I Lawrie), will be published in November. Details about both books may be obtained from Ingrid Lawrie, extension 3640, e-mail
