Champagne toast for new virtual training suite

The University of Leeds was one of six UK universities chosen to launch the new Resource Discovery Network virtual training suite with a simultaneous champagne toast.

The suite at www.vts.rdn.ac.uk is a new national internet initiative providing a series of forty free tutorials delivered over the Web, each designed to teach internet literacy for a specific subject. The tutorials are useful for both staff and students, and help to develop the skills of locating, evaluating and using relevant Internet resources.

Four of the tutorials – internet philosopher, internet theologian, internet for religious studies and internet for the history and philosophy of science – were written by University staff and postgraduates including those from the Philosophical and Religious Studies learning and teaching support network.

The suites offer the opportunity to tour key web sites in the chosen subject area, and practical ideas for using the internet to support study, teaching or research, with emphasis on the critical evaluation of internet information.

Links to interesting sites can be placed in a ‘basket’ to be viewed after the tutorial is completed, and the tutorial explains how to bookmark sites for later use.

The site has tutorials in engineering, mathematics, computing, health and life sciences, humanities, internet information, physical sciences, social sciences, business and law, with more subject areas to be brought online in the near future.
