Paradoxes win prize

First year pure mathematics PhD student Giorgios Barmpalias has won the first international essay prize on the history and philosophy of computability sponsored by the Advanced Reasoning Forum and Wadsworth Publishing Company. His essay ‘Self-Reference and Paradoxes’ deals with the paradoxes (logical antinomies) which were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century by mathematicians, and formed obstacles to some programmes of the period, such as logicism, in which Godlob Frege and Bertrand Russell were prominent.
