Issue 467, 21 May 2001

Professor Joyce Hill, Professor Katie Wales and Professor David Fairer of the School of English have been elected as fellows of the English Association – of whom there are only 150 in UK higher education.

Professor Duncan Dowson has won the highest award the Institute of Mechanical Engineers can bestow and that a mechanical engineer can receive. The James Watt international medal is awarded every two years, and the gold medal for 2001 has been given in recognition of Professor Dowson’s position as the ‘leading practitioner of the art and science of tribology’.
