Listening and learning

A prestigious prize for the best paper on mining and metallurgy has been awarded to a Leeds academic. Professor Williams won the Noel E Webster medal for his work with Dr Rouzhou Hou on the use of microphones to ‘listen in’ on industrial processes. Computers and models then interpret the noises and correlate them with possible changes in the substance monitored. Since microphones are low cost and small, the procedure can be adopted easily and at low cost within process plants and is an attractive method for process analysis.
