The campus smoking ban should now be extended to all offices, and better provision should be made for smokers, Senate agreed.
Senate’s recommendation to modify the smoking prohibition, introduced in June 1998, was due to be considered by Council as the Reporter went to press.
The extension of the ban to cover offices follows recent Health and Safety Commission guidance on passive smoking. It is also supported by campus trade unions.
A number of areas needed to be addressed, such as the availability of well-ventilated areas for smokers, and the problem of smokers congregating at building entrances.
