The 40-day switch-off

What would life be like without TV? Dr Richard Howells, of the Institute of Communications Studies has agreed to abstain from the box for Lent, in preparation for a Radio 4 programme to be broadcast on Good Friday. Four regular contributors to media discussion programme The Message will be taking part, each giving up a medium close to their hearts.

The programme will allow the ‘media castaways’ to share their experiences, and they will be reporting regularly on their fast on the BBC website. Richard, who specialises in visual culture, is feeling the pinch. "Let me tell you – it hurts already!" he said. "I miss it tremendously!"
