In the wake of the foot and mouth epidemic, Senior Lecturer in Animal Science at the University, Dr Mike Wilkinson has added his voice to the campaign for people to be supplied with locally-produced meat and animal food products.
In a strongly-worded letter to the press, Dr Wilkinson urges people to campaign vigorously for the return of the local abattoir, as well as calling for financial help for livestock farmers affected by this recent outbreak.
He says the epidemic spread so quickly because animals are transported great distances to abattoirs. Many small local abattoirs have been forced to close due to falling margins and restrictive EU bureaucracy – and also because some supermarkets specify which abattoir a producer must use.
