New chief at HEFCE

Professor Sir Howard Newby, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, has been appointed Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) with effect from 1 October 2001. He succeeds Sir Brian Fender.

Professor Newby, 52, is President of Universities UK, formerly known as the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals the UK body which represents the university sector.

Universities UKs new president is Professor Roderick Floud, Provost of London Guildhall University. He succeeds Professor Newby on August 1 and will remain president for the two academic years 2001-2 and 2002-3
