Equal Opportunities Training For Chairs of Appointments and Promotions Panels

There is increasingly an expectation that employers can show that they provide appropriate training for members of staff who are responsible for recruitment and promotion activities. This training is important to enable members of staff to understand the legal employment framework and to promote good equal opportunities practice.

As a matter of policy the University has taken the view that any member of staff who chairs an appointments or promotions panel at any level in the University should receive training, with periodic updates, in equal opportunities in employment. This policy was approved by Planning and Resources Committee on 22 May 2000. Staff who will be invited to attend the forthcoming training sessions include chairs of:

  1. University central appointments and promotions committees
  2. departmental promotions panels for all categories of staff
  3. Research School committees (which judge the prima facie stage of Readership promotion applications)
  4. any interview panel which results in the appointment of staff in any category. In practice this will include any member of staff who has lead responsibility for recruiting a new member of staff, including principal investigators responsible for recruiting research staff.

A schedule of Equal Opportunities briefings has been established for the period February to July 2001, and wherever possible chairs should be trained during this period. We have kept the length of the briefing sessions to a minimum given the demands on people’s time. Anyone who has not attended a briefing will not normally be eligible to chair a promotions or appointments committee/panel. A register of ‘trained’ chairs will be kept centrally in Human Resources. Further briefings will be arranged on an ongoing basis so that new chairs can be trained. Periodic updates will be held for all who have received initial training.

I should be grateful if you would, by Monday 22 January:

  1. return Form A attached to Kathy Aveyard in Human Resources to inform her of the identity of all colleagues who currently, or who will in the near future, chair a panel or committee in one of the above categories (a-d) and will therefore need to attend an Equal Opportunities briefing;
  2. copy the attached information and booking form to all colleagues whom you have identified so that they can book themselves onto one of the briefings by the deadline of Friday 9 February.

If you have any queries about this memo please do not hesitate to contact Kathy Aveyard on

Equal Opportunities Training For Chairs

of Appointments and Promotions Panels

February – July 2001

The University has determined that any member of staff who chairs an appointments or promotions panel at any level in the University should receive training, with periodic updates, in equal opportunities in employment. This policy was approved by Planning and Resources Committee on 22 May 2000. Staff who will need to be trained include chairs of:

  1. University central appointments and promotions committees
  2. departmental promotions panels
  3. Research School committees
  4. any interview panel which results in the appointment of staff in any category.

As you currently chair such a committee, or are likely to do so in the near future, I am writing to invite you to attend an Equal Opportunities briefing. A schedule of such briefings has been established for the period February to July 2001, as attached, and all existing and potential chairs must be trained during this period. We have kept the length of these briefings to a minimum given the demands on people’s time.

Each briefing will last for a maximum of 2 hours and will be presented by the University Legal Adviser, Adrian Slater, and Christine Bannon/Kathy Aveyard/ Keiron Broadhead from Human Resources. All 10 briefings will address the following topics:

In addition the six briefings marked * on the attached schedule will include a general overview of promotion and the issues which might impact on promotion prospects, including part-time working, maternity leave, sickness and disability. These aspects will be presented by Dr Harry Lewis, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Staff. If you will be chairing a promotions panel please ensure that you attend a briefing on one of the dates marked *.

All briefings will be held in SDDU Training Room 1, G12, Baines Wing.

I should be grateful if you would complete the attached form, indicating the date of your preferred briefing, and return it to Mandy Ellis in SDDU by Friday 9 February. SDDU will confirm your place with you.
