Close call: Clarence Docks student residences in the eye of the storm as the River Aire surges by. The flats on the bank of the swollen Aire have been on flood alert since last week – although architects had the foresight to design the complex a metre higher than the previous record flood level of 1947.

At the peak of last week’s deluge, the waterlogged towpath was closed down and areas near the neighbouring Royal Armouries were awash. Water came up to within centimetres of the fence at the Clarence Docks site.
