Leading playwright Volker Braun, winner of this year’s Buechner Prize, Germany’s most prestigious literary award, has visited the Department of German Language and Literature to give a reading.
Herr Braun was in Britain for a guest appearance at the Poetry International event at the Royal Festival Hall. He told a packed audience of students and staff that he had turned down an opportunity to be at a reception with Federal Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, in order to be able to honour his long-standing commitment to come to Leeds, his only other appearance in the UK.
His presentation gave an insight into the experience of dissident intellectuals in the former German Democratic Republic and their experience of the collapse of socialism and unification of Germany.
