NEW CHAIRS


Dr Mike Baynham, from the University of Technology in Sydney, has joined the School of Education in the Chair of Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages. His research concerns include socio-cultural perspectives on literacy.


Dr Colin Harvey, assistant director of the Human Rights Centre at Queen’s University, Belfast, has taken up a new Chair in Constitutional and Human Rights Law in the School of Law. His interests include the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and the changing constitutional structure of the UK.


Professor GRJ (Bob) Hockey, who held a Chair in psychology at the University of Hull, has been appointed Professor of Human Performance in the School of Psychology. His main areas of work include cognitive engineering and human responses to difficult work conditions and other forms of environmental stress.


Dr Neil Jackson has been appointed to the Hoffman Wood Chair of Architectural Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering. He was a reader in architectural history at the University of Nottingham. His work focuses on 19th and 20th-century British and American architecture, especially the steel house of the Modern school.


Professor Edgar Knobloch, who held a Chair in physics at the University of California, Berkeley, has taken up a Chair in Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematics. His research interests include non-linear dynamics of dissipative systems, with a particular focus on bifurcation theory and non-linear waves.
