Professor Alan Watson

Professor Alan Watson, head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society. The Society’s citation highlighted Professor Watson’s world-leading work on cosmic rays of the highest energy. He is also a Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the Institute of Physics.

Professor John Barnard of the School of English has become one of the first recipients of the Fellowship of the English Association. The awards were inaugurated earlier this month to honour service to English in education.

Professor Katie Wales, Dean-elect for learning and teaching in the Faculty of Arts, has been appointed to the committee managing the new HEFCE-funded English subject centre based at Royal Holloway, University of London, run jointly with the Council for Colleges and University Teachers of English and King’s College London.

Dr John Wales, senior lecturer in medicine at the General Infirmary, was a special guest at the opening of a new building for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain. Dr Wales was the Foundation Professor and chairman of the UAE University’s medicine school and helped design the building and the curriculum.
