New chairs

Dr Trudie Roberts, of the University of Manchester, has been appointed to a Chair of Medical Education and to the directorship of the Medical Education Unit in the School of Medicine.

The University has announced the award of 21 professorial chairs in the recent promotional exercise.

The appointments are: Colin Barnes as Professor of Disability Studies in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy; James Best as Professor of Process Sedimentology in the School of Earth Sciences; Alistair Hall as Professor of Clinical Cardiology in the BHF Heart Research Centre; Thomas Hartquist as Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy; Malcolm Heath as Professor of Greek Language and Literature in the School of Classics; Wendy Hollway as Professor of Qualitative Psychology in the School of Psychology; Animesh Jha as Professor of Applied Materials Science in the Department of Materials; John Kennedy as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the School of Chemistry; Kim Knott as Professor of Religious Studies in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies; Michael Krom as Professor of Marine and Environmental Geochemistry in the School of Earth Sciences; David Lindley as Professor of Renaissance Literature in the School of English; Andrew McIntosh as Professor of Thermodynamics and Combustion Theory in the Department of Fuel and Energy; Frank Nijhoff as Professor of Mathematical Physics in the Department of Applied Mathematics; Lionel Orton as Professor of Art History and Theory in the Department of Fine Art; Sheena Radford as Professor of Structural Molecular Biology in the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Michael Rathjen as Professorial Research Fellow in Mathematical Logic in the Department of Pure Mathematics; Sasha Roseneil as Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy; Geoffrey Sandle as Professor of Clinical Science in the School of Medicine; Maxim Silverman as Professor of Modern French Studies in the Department of French and Michael Wilson as Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Applied Mathematical Studies.

Promotional chairs awarded earlier in this session, but not hitherto recorded in the Reporter, include the appointment of Alan Tennant as Professor of Rehabilitation Studies in the School of Medicine’s Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Research Unit; John Soussan as Professor of Environment and Development in the School of Geography; Robert Maltby as Professor of Latin Philology in the School of Classics; Jenny Hewison as Professor in the Psychology of Healthcare in the School of Psychology; and Michael Barkham as Professor of Clinical and Counselling Psychology in the School of Psychology.
