The University has joined with Leeds Metropolitan University and the city council to employ a community relations officer to work for better links between the student population and other residents in the Burley, Headingley and Hyde Park areas.
Alex Sobel, formerly sabbatical finance officer in the University union and latterly West Yorkshire convener for the National Union of Students, has been appointed to the post. More than 20,000 students rent privately in Leeds, and their geographical concentration inevitably places extra pressures on local facilities. The new officer will liaise between the community and university agencies including accommodation services, security offices, student unions and student community action groups.
