Free training for food industry workers in Yorkshire is being offered by the food science department.
The INTOFOOD project offers a short training course resulting in a Certificate of Food Studies for workers in small to medium sized enterprises.
Project coordinator Pat Millner said the scheme had been successful in winning funds from the European Social Fund as it will develop and increase the skills of people working in an increasingly automated industry. Rapid improvements in technology have threatened the success of small companies, which struggle to keep up and meet public demands, she added.
Students completing the certificate will have the opportunity to continue their studies towards a diploma or degree in food science. The course is offered over four long weekends and is backed up with distance learning and tutor support.
