New chairs


John Leach has been appointed to a Chair of Science Education in the Centre for Studies in Science and Mathematics Education, School of Education, as from January 1. He was previously a senior lecturer in the centre.
Professor Leach works in the area of teaching and learning in science. His interests include teaching for conceptual understanding, teaching and learning about the professional practice of science, and the use of research evidence by practitioners in education.


Kevin Roberts has been appointed to a Chair of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering (January 1). Professor Roberts was previously a professor of chemical process engineering at Heriot-Watt University.
His major research interests include molecular and interface engineering, the properties of particulate products, crystal growth theory and solid/liquid interfacial systems.


Michael Smith has been appointed to a Chair of Atmospheric Physics in the Leeds Environment Centre (January 1). Professor Smith was previously a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Sunderland.
His major research interests centre on the formation, composition and activity of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. The particles can act as cloud compensation nuclei and have important implications for climate change.
