John tackling the Taj Mahal - on wheels

A computer system administrator in the medical school is marking his 50th birthday with a gruelling week-long cycle ride across northern India next month.

John Armstrong has pledged to raise 2,500 for children's charity Whizz-Kidz, which supplies disabled children with mobility aids. Mr Armstrong's 341km route will take him down rough country roads, past a tiger sanctuary and will end at the Taj Mahal. "I haven't really done any serious cycling since I was in my teens," he said. "But I am training several times a week, slowly building up the distance I cover."
