The life and work of former president of Tanzania Mwalimu Julius Nyerere will be commemorated at a memorial meeting at the University next week (November 30).
Nyerere is the architect of modern Tanzania, presiding over its transition from the former Tanganyika. As the first president of newly-independent Tanzania he pioneered the country's system of ujamaa socialism.
Speakers at the event include his former PA Joan Wicken and a representative from the Tanzanian High Commission. The meeting takes place at 5pm in the Leeds University Centre for African Studies, Economics and Social Sciences Building, room 11.13.
