The University's first ever student enrolled 125 years ago tomorrow (October 26).
Shadrach Stephenson, it is said, remained in splendid isolation as the University's sole tutee for two days before being joined by a colleague. Shadrach, the first man through the doors of the original Yorkshire College, was a mining student, and the present mining and mineral engineering department is celebrating the anniversary with a number of events next month. These include a celebration dinner, an open day and the official opening of the centre for particle and colloid engineering. For more information see the Reporter website.
