University Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Wilson is the new chair of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals' Research Policy Sector Group. The twelve sector groups determine CVCP policy on a variety of higher education issues.

Professor Jo Shaw from the Centre for the Study of Law in Europe has been selected as a delegate for the 1999 British-American project conference 'Art & Soul: Making Culture Count' in Harrogate next month.

Professor Katie Wales has been appointed Visiting Fellow, Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge for a year from October 1999.

Institute of Communications Studies teaching fellow and Radio Leeds breakfast show presenter Liz Green has won the BT regional news broadcaster award. Institute director Phil Taylor has won the Carfax/International Association of Media and History prize for best journal article for 1998, with co-author Nick Weekes. Breaking the German will to resist; allied efforts to end the Second World War by non-military means, 1944-5, was published by the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television. More
